The Bell Jar, written by Sylvia Plath, is a fictionalized memoir centered around main character, Esther Greenwood. Esther is a young woman from Boston who is extremely intelligent and funds her education through several scholarships. As she continuously draws nearer to the end of her education, Esther begins to realize the constraints put on women in the society she was born into. Women of this time were expected to get married and have children while also giving up their aspirations of a career to become a housewife. Esther, an avid writer at heart, wants to have a career in writing rather than raising a family. Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions ââ¬â a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Dà ¶ring Muraca, 2010). Conflict and Negotiation Communicating

We subscribe to different beliefs. We look at life from varying and diverse perspective. We may not have the same approach of communicating. Efforts to harmonize these differences can be a hard nut to crack. They lead to conflict hence the emergence of the need for negotiation. Solving conflicts is constructive. Therefore, for the interest of the smooth running of the activities, the company should adhere to applying proper and peaceful means to solving conflicts. One of those means can be negotiating. This paper offers an explanation on literature done on conflict and negotiation. We will begin by defining key concepts and conclude with application. Conflict For one to diagnose a problem there needs to be an understanding of what he problem is. In the same way, we need to know what conflict so as to reduce or eliminate it. Simply speaking, conflict indicates a difference as a result of peoples interaction (Hedges, 2015). This difference can be communicated both verbally and non-verbally. Conflicts occur in all communication contexts i.e. intrapersonal, interpersonal and group communication (Johns, 2016). From a personal perspective, it is a point one feels that his/her interests are being opposed by another party. From an organizational perspective, conflict is the result of opposing interests involving scarce resources, goal divergence and frustration (Ramsbothan, 2016). Being a result of interaction, conflict is normal. There are two types of conflicts; destructive and constructive conflict (Nuru, 2014). Constructive conflict is helpful. Normally it indicates on something missing. If that thing is provided, it can add value to the productivity of the organization. Destructive conflict often destroys what took a long time to build. It neither has a basis, nor goodwill intention at heart (Hedges, 2015). Conflict Management This is the stage where we try to harmonize our differences in so as to coexist peacefully with others. Conflict management is not a stag e, it is a process. It is not a one-time thing; it is continuous (Stamato, 2014). It is a collective role that needs everyones contribution. This is process creates a thin line between destructive and constructive conflict (Sumita, 2011). Many scholars have defined conflict management as the process of applying different strategies for the purposes of containment of conflict without necessarily solving it (Sumita, 2011). It may not solve a conflict, but forms a foundation for doing so. It is the process of eliminating destructive elements of a conflict. It provides a platform for solving a conflict on a neutral and peaceful basis (Ramsbothan, 2016). As mentioned earlier, conflicts can destroy in order to solve it; there has to be an elimination of the destructive elements. Eliminating destructive elements transforms the conflict into a constructive one (Thangarathinam, 2015). Conflict Resolution This term is closely related to conflict management. Many authors use them two interchangeably implying that they are synonymous but they are not. Conflict resolution refers to the resolution of the underlying incompatibilities in a conflict and mutual acceptance of each partys existence (Sumita, 2011). Conflict resolution can be both formal and informa (Vertino, 2014)l. It can either apply proper and designated principles or in an open and predictable process (Yuan, 2015). For the purpose of this topic, we will need to look at the distinction between conflict management and conflict resolution as put out by other authors. Conflict Management and Resolution Many researchers claim that conflict management is a tool for conflict resolution (Kalat, 2013). That is, to resolve a conflict we need conflict management. Some scholars have also argued that the two perform similar roles but on different levels. That is conflict resolution is meant to solve a current conflict so that business can move on as usual while conflict management solves deeper and underlying issues over a certain period of time (Jumbert, 2016). Negotiation Negotiations play a major role in both social and professional life. Without it, we may not end up fulfilling our needs. Different scholars have defined negotiation differently. It all depends on context. For the purpose of this paper, we will only look at how other authors have defined negotiation from a business or management point of view and in relation to conflict. It is a process where conflicting parties attempt to re- solve their divergent goals by redefining the terms of their interdependence (Vertino, 2014). This definition implies that negotiation is a one of the methods used in conflict resolution. Similarly, negotiation has been defined as using information and communication in order to arrive at a solution that is acceptable to all the parties (Hedges, 2015). Most negotiation process end up in a win-win situations hence many prefer it when solving a conflict (Juan, 2015). Conflict Process Model This section will offer an explanation of conflict life cycle. A conflict takes time before manifesting itself. A conflict process model contains different processes happening at different phase of a conflict. The process begins with sources of conflict. As mentioned earlier, a conflict occurs when we feel like our interests are being opposed by others and where there is competition for unequally distributed resources in an organization as well as differences in goal (Sumita, 2011). Conflicts are caused by incompatible goals, differentiation, interdependence, scarce resources, ambiguous rules and communication problems (Vertino, 2014). Consequently, conflict sources enable one to be aware of the existence of conflict hence the next stage of the process model is perception and emotions. Perceiving our interests and goals as being different from others causes and emotional reaction (Johns, 2016). Conflict perception and emotions lead to conflict manifestation. This is where we show the existence of conflict. People choose to exhibit conflict differently depending on its degree (Stamato, 2014). Conflict manifestation varies from non-verbal communication to aggressive and violent behaviours. Moreover, manifestation includes the style one employs to resolve a conflict (Hedges, 2015). The last stage of the model is conflict outcome. This is the end result of a conflict. The outcomes may be positive or negative and it all depends on how the conflict was handled (Sumita, 2011). Positive conflict outcomes may include team cohesion, better decisions and responsive organization while the negative outcomes may be distorted information, lower performance, employee turnover and politics (Sumita, 2011). Conflict Resolution through Negotiation Negotiations happen on a daily basis. Sometimes we do not even know that we are negotiating. To be a good negotiator, you have to have that right information. Also you have to learn to read people so as to know how to reveal information (Nuru, 2014). Chances are you do not want to reveal too much information and get less. Negotiation involves balancing making compromises for others needs (Johns, 2016). In resolving a conflict, negotiation undergoes through three major points: Initial offer point, target point and resilience (Miller, 2014). The initial offer point is the stage when a party communicates his/her offer to the other party. What follows is the target point where the communication about what is expected is made (Miller, 2014). The resilience point is the last stage of a negotiation process and it where a party will make no further concessions (Nuru, 2014). Theory of Conflict This theory states that tensions and disagreement grow when resources, status, and power are unevenly distributed between groups in a society, these conflicts become the agent of a social change (Kalat, 2013). This theory in Karl Marx work which focused on the causes and effects of class conflicts between owners of production means with capitalists and the working class considered to be poor (Kalat, 2013). Karl Max states that conflict rides on the existence of a powerful minority class and oppressed majority. This coexistence leads to a conflict in class because there is uneven distribution of resources. Face-Negotiation Theory It was developed by Stella Ting-Toomey. The general idea behind this theory is that the difference in handling conflicts can be part of maintaining a face in the society (Kalat, 2013). Face is identity, persona and public image (Nuru, 2014). Additionally, conflict styles differ depending on culture. This theory focuses on people from two cultures: Collectivist and individualistic cultures. The following are the central points of the theory: It is critical to comprehend the significance of face for a person and the need for maintaining that face. Collectivist cultures avoid or integrate conflict while individualistic cultures dominate conflict so as to maintain an independent face in the society. Status generates power. Stella then classifies conflicts into 5 categories based on the above factors. The first type is domination. It is an individualistic approach to decision making in conflicts through dominating or taking control (Kalat, 2013). Avoiding type of conflict style is a collectivist approach of not being involved in a conflict (Stamato, 2014). The next type is obliging which involves giving up on a conflict and it is used by collectivist. Compromising is an individualistic approach that involves negotiating in order to arrive at a solution (Kalat, 2013). Lastly, integrating which involves coming together to reach a solution (Kalat, 2013). This theory can be applied in interpersonal and group communication contexts. Diagnostic Tools Results I used three diagnostic tools namely: The Big 5 personality test, The Thomas Khilman Conflict mode Questionnaire and The Belbin team inventory. The Big Five Test showed that I am a relaxed person who finds it easy to express emotions and seek out new experiences. However, the test found that I am neither particularly social nor reserved. The Thomas Khilman Conflict Questionnaire showed that my strongest conflict resolution style can be compromising especially when collaboration and competition fails to apply in the set up. Lastly, The Belbin Team inventory showed that I am more of a complete finisher type of a person in a group. This means that I am goal-oriented and my focus is normally on accomplishing a task at whatever cost. Judging by the results from the three tools, I can say that they relate. When put together, they can describe my personality type and how I approach conflicts well. Being a finisher means getting rid of stumbling blocks to as to achieve a goal. To avoid wastage of time and resources, one can compromise others needs. Comparison to the Literature Review The diagnostic tools included variables that are important in conflict resolution. From the Thomas Khilman Questionnaire tool, I found that I am best at compromising. It is a technique discussed earlier in the process of negotiation where we are willing to forego some of our needs to accommodate others. In the same way, the diagnostic tools give a range of reaction to situations meaning that people react different to conflicts as mentioned in the literature review. From the Face-Negotiation theory we are told that the differences are due to cultural diversity. Judging by the way many companies are embracing the use of diagnostic tools tests alongside IQ tests, it means that they are quiet important. Apart from using them for personal discovery, they can also be used by others to know us for example potential employers (Woodhouse, 2014). Personality inventories serve a variety of purposes. First, they make people aware of their thinking, emotions and emotional make-up (Johns, 2016). Then, they teach people on the correlation between their actions and others reaction (Johns, 2016). Lastly, they enable people to regulate our emotions through cutting on the negative and reinforcing the positive traits (Sumita, 2011). These tests are valid for personality evaluation because they ensure that a set objective is achieved (Kalat, 2013). For example, Team work and Team roles inventory is used to determine a persons capability of working in a group set-up peaceful. Although these inventories are helpful, sometimes they only cause more harm than good. This is so in the employment field. These tools are subjective; they are based on someones understanding of something and not necessarily facts (Kalat, 2013). When hiring, the focus should be on what someone can do and not on what he/she feels at that particular time (Stamato, 2014). Therefore, it is unjust to use information gotten from these tests to judge on a persons potential. Areas of Improvement I found the diagnostic tools rather long and tiresome to take. For example, the Big 5 personality test has a total of 46 questions. To get accurate results one has to answer all of them. Since most questions area almost asking about the same thing, they should be combined into one. Shortening the tool length ensures the following: One has fun while conducting the test One takes enough time to think about a question before answering. One provides accurate answers The second area of improvement would be simplifying the scoring sheets and making them more comprehensive to the users. The basis of taking these tests is to be able to understand yourself more. You cannot gauge yourself if you do not comprehend the results well. Therefore I suggest that the tests scoring sheet be made simpler to interpret. There are a number of activities that can be used in Conflict and negotiation. In this section, I will highlight some of these activities and their importance. The first one is Training managers to be mediators. The main focus of this activity is using the top management of an organization to oversee on ways of reducing or toning down conflict related cases. As a matter of fact, more managers get several cases of conflict among the employees but consequently fail to address such cases because of their inability to do so. Proper training of these managers thus comes with hope of reducing conflict because, based on the knowledge from training, they will b in a position to solve the conflict. Benchmarking is another activity to be used in understanding conflict and negotiation. An organization can organize for its employees to go to a more established organization to study the interaction between employees within that organization. In this activity, the employees may learn from their fellows how to manage conflict and negotiation cases related cases. Similarly, clarification of roles can help a great deal in avoiding conflicts, especially the conflicts related to roles. Each employee should have hi/her roles clearly stated to avoid potential conflicts arising from roles of the employees. An organization should also conduct workshops aimed at enlightening the employees on the importance of conflict and negotiation. Experts should be invited to provide the right and useful information to the employees regarding the need for harmony and unity in the work places. This ensures that the organization members focus is on achieving the companys goals since the members will now when to resolve a conflict and when to apply negation as a resolution for the same. The last activity is holding or sending employees to conferences whose themes are related to conflict and negotiation. Conferences serve as a source of further knowledge that is supplementary to a persons qualifications. Most Conferences are conducted annually or on a monthly basis. A company may choose to hold its own conference. Many organizations have been brought to the ground because of failing to apply effective ways of solving a conflict. Results of Questionnaire My questionnaire received a number of votes supporting the re-nationalisation of the railways. A lot of people felt that the only real incentive for Railtrack and the operating companies like Virgin Trains is to make more profit for their shareholders. They felt Railways should be seen as part of the public infrastructure and returned to public ownership. One person said they would be prepared to pay more if the railways were publicly owned, but not to private companies just to add to their profits. Recent reports from the BBC News online suggest that it will be unbelievably expensive to re-nationalise the railways and will give less control to the government but they would have more direct control and influence over the polices and practices. My questionnaire revealed that 58% of people are willing to spend a little more if it will guarantee them a better service. Secondary research Public transport According to social trends 2000, the number of rail journeys has increased since 1981-82, and is now approaching the levels of the late 1950s. This is the highest number of passenger journeys since 1962, but there had been more than a billion rail passenger journeys a year in 1961 and before. The amount of distanced travelled are much higher than the early 1960s, which suggests that people are using the railways for longer journeys than previously. This stat is good for Virgin Trains as they provide a long distance travel service to places like London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. Rail complaints Following the Hatfield crash in October 2000, which the Health and Safety Executive believe was due to a fractured rail, temporary speed restrictions (TSRs) were imposed by Railtrack on around one thousand sites throughout the national rail network. Due to these restrictions Virgin Trains had to issue new timetables for its services, and these, coupled with severe flooding in some areas, had an adverse affect on service timelines. For example, between July and September 2000, 80 per cent of long distance trains arrived on time (within 10 minutes of advertised time); between October and December, this figure fell to 48 per cent. You can even argue that his fellow judges are more musically adept. But Cowell has positioned himself as the expert. The public are divided revering and reviling him in equal measure. But what he says goes. No-one can deny his status and authority in the music industry. As a sales professional, you could do well to take a leaf out of Cowells book. The market for office supply equipment is crowded, with many brands jostling for space. Your prospects need a shortcut to enable them to decide who to buy from and what to buy. There often isnt time for them to kick-back with a cup of tea and analyse the messages youre communicating through your sales and marketing material. But you can stand out by positioning yourself as an expert. Prospective customers will start to see you as a trusted advisor before theyve even engaged your services. And they will be more likely to buy from you as a result. Expert status can lead to other opportunities, such as giving speeches or hosting workshops, which again make selling easier. Its a virtuous circle. Yet, we Brits can be a self-deprecating bunch. We often prefer to operate our businesses and careers with as little fanfare as possible. The thought of public speaking can send shivers down our spines. But through writing, even the most unassuming character can shine. And writing reports, articles, white papers and blogs can help you to become the preferred provider in the industry. Whats more, good writing doesnt just have to be an innate skill: its something you can learn. These seven steps will help you write your way to expert status. One Consistently show how your company differentiates itself in the marketplace. Dont be afraid to recommend doing things differently. Two Be curious about your clients. What really makes them tick? Get to know your clients inside out by asking lots of questions, rather than making assumptions about what they need and want. Three Then write from their perspective, not yours. Think beyond the products or services you offer and focus on how your business has an impact on the lives of your clients. Whether youre writing a brochure, pamphlet or article, you need to focus on your clients needs. Begin by asking yourself: What is the document about? Who will read it? How much do they already know about the subject? What do they absolutely need to know? How important is the subject to them? How interested are they in the subject? (Note that readers arent always interested in whats important to them. So you often need to make them interested.) To become a trusted advisor, your writing needs to be clear and punchy. Action Suggest what action the reader can or should take. Offer a viewpoint that is new and intriguing. Politeness Finally, end with a polite but thought-provoking sign-off. Five Suggest article ideas to trade newspapers and magazines. The articles that will best position you as an expert are how to features. You could reveal the secrets behind photocopier maintenance, or how to eke the most out of ink cartridges, for instance. Send a synopsis of the article to the magazine first. Write a snappy headline and standfirst (the two lines under the headline). Then write an attention-grabbing opening paragraph and a few bullet points about what your article will include. The magazine editor can then give you further guidelines to ensure your article is a hit with the readers. Six Blogs have a worldwide audience of millions. So its well worth setting up a blog and using it to connect with your clients. Pay careful attention to every post you make. Only write things you dont mind being broadcast on the 10 Oclock News. Dont ever gripe about clients or competitors. Seven In your writing, include examples of how you and your company make a real difference to people. Make your writing personal. Responsibility of Health Promotion in Nursing Health promotion as defined by World Health Organization is ââ¬Å"a health strategy that aims to incorporate skills and community development and to create supportive environment for health, endeavors to build healthy public policy and looks at re-orienting health services. (WHO, 1986). Health promotion is strongly rooted in a social philosophy that attributed the etiology of ill health to adverse social conditions rather than medical care. Also, structurally and traditionally, the formal health system often produces major obstacles to meaningful involvement in health promotion and community empowerment activities. The communities do not have the interest and the capacity to make any tangible contribution to community participation even if they are willing to do so but the basic concepts of health promotion which have their root in ancient civilization has be en developed in the last two decades. The purpose of health education is to strengthen the skills and capabilities of individuals to take action, and the groups or communities to act collectively to take control over the determinants of health bringing about positive change It serves as essential guide in addressing the major health challenges encountered by developing and developed nations including communicable diseases and issues associated with human development and health enabling people to take action either as individuals or groups. Also, it is an avenue to encourage individuals to take preventive measures in averting worsening of an illness or disease and to adopt healthier lifestyles. In the three journal articles selected for review from the GCU Library which incorporates the three levels of health promotion namely; primary, secondary, and tertiary, the nursing responsibilities were described to include; educating and helping people obtain skills to maintain their health, making efforts to better understand the patients and their conditions in order to provide effective care because mutual understanding between a practitioner and patient is the key to giving quality care. The nurses must have an evidence-based knowledge of the significant effect that can be made through health promotion interventions and communicate this understanding to the community at large. As more people grow in their awareness of activities that lead to good heal th and become knowledgeable about their own health status, the health of their families, the overall health of the population will improve. Knowing that health promotion encompasses a broader spectrum and include social and political interventions that could provide change to services and policies in the community promoting social responsibility for health, nursing roles and responsibilities have evolved in health promotion by allowing nurses to promote health in diverse settings like homes, schools, prison, general practice and workplace contrary to the past when it was limited to hospital settings only. The implementation of health promotion starts from setting priority , assessing needs and program planning stages, according to the journal article reviewed from GCU Library, the topic being; ââ¬Å"Collaboration between primary and secondary/tertiary services in oral healthâ⬠, the process includes: capturing high level support by re-orienting health services , building links with primary care and reducing inequality, creating health promotion team in a way that individuals will have a role and more innovative ideas, workforce development, developing health promotion policy, collecting data that will drive the health promotion initiatives, helping to assess health interest and risks thereby helping to guide the kind of health program to offer, choosing appropriate health promotion initiatives that flow nationally from data so as to address the prevailing risk factors of the people, crafting annual health promotion so as to promote continuity, giving encouragement opportunities a nd rewards, maintaining leadership and innovation, communicating with everyone involved in the program throughout, monitoring regularly and consistently evaluating the outcomes. The process of executing the program must include; education of the nursing staff, education of the patients and family, screening, individual risk factor assessment and immunization, social marketing and health information, health education and skill development, community action. Settings and supportive environments, Health education is an important factor of health promotion. As described by Naidoo and Wills (2000), the three levels of health education are: Primary prevention which is health promotion activities that prevent disease. For example immunization, itââ¬â¢s a holistic idea of positive health that encourages the achievement and maintenance of a suitable level of health which enables every individual to lead a productive life both socially and economically. Secondary prevention aims at shortening episode of illness or disease by hindering the progression of ill health through prompt diagnosis and treatment limiting disability. An example is screening also known asâ⬠health maintenanceâ⬠. It is the domain of clinical medicine. It is more expensive and less effective than primary prevention. Tertiary prevention help limit complications related to a disease or a state after it has been developed by minimizing suffering caused by existing departure from good health and promote the patients adjustment to irreversible conditions such as cardiac rehabilitation. In line with the literature review from the GCU Library journal article, I agree with the fact that approach to health promotion should be the one that demonstrate a range of values and beliefs that are commonly held because an individualââ¬â¢s approach will be influenced by their own beliefs and that of the profession they represent. According to Ewles and Simnett (2003), these approaches include medical approach, beviour change approach, educational approach, e empowerment approach, and social change approach. Coming to Terms It's not a light bulb that suddenly turns on. It's not a bolt of lightning that strikes you without pain. It's more like a boot; a steel toe boot that literally drops out of the sky and kicks you directly in the face, knocking out the majority of your teeth and smashing your nose into a bloody mess. That's more what it's like when you come to a realization. All that talk of a magical epiphany is left in the dust while the boot moves on to its next victim. It doesn't let you see through some new set of eyes; it dulls your other senses so that all you can do is see. You see what you've been missing for a long time. Being a person of many passionate convictions, its fair to say that I've had to have facial reconstructive surgery quite a few times. It most notably happened my sophomore year of college, taking a class called ââ¬Å"Cubans in the USA .â⬠Of course my family warned me that the professor was a raging communist, known for such ghastly evils as not believing in the embargo, questioning the motives of the Cuban American National Foundation, and, dare I say it, not thinking that Fidel Castro was the anti-Christ in the flesh! (Oh no! Stone Him!) So sure enough, the first day I went in, wearing a Cuban flag pendant, guns ablaze, ready to strike down this hedonistic infidel with my passionate patriotism. But something happened. He told us to give him a chance to ward off these notions our grandmothers instilled in us. (Oh no, he's already using some evil mind control technique! ) But I did give him a chance. And at the end of the semester, I was eager to learn more of how to correct my mis-education, without loosing my sense of pride in my background, while slowing recovering from the boot's most vicious attack. But even more recently, and more notably, it happened during our visit to the South Florida Water Management District. I scanned the website the night before class and went in on Friday morning, armed with my deep, uncontestable knowledge of the everglades, ready to battle this evil government agency whose sole purpose had to be to serve as a faà §ade for the fact that the government didn't care about the everglades.

Oedipus the King by Sophocles Essay
Sophocles was one of the greatest Greek playwrights presented the most delightful work of the human civilization ââ¬â the drama ââ¬Å"Oedipus the Kingâ⬠. Sophocles is a person that stood in the centre of the plot and determines the central crisis of the tragedy ââ¬â moral self-determination of Oedipus. However, the crisis is not as simple as it may seem. One more central problem is that all deeds and actions of Oedipus are fated by the Gods and, therefore, Oedipus doesnââ¬â¢t have free will to choose his destiny. Sophocles reveals the theme of the universal scope: who rules the destiny ââ¬â the God or a person himself. Looking for an answer to eternal question the main hero Oedipus has left his native town and practically doomed himself to a certain death. Thus, Oedipus can be defined as dramatic character. The downfall of Oedipus the King was fated by the Gods and he was unable to change his destiny. All Oedipusââ¬â¢ actions were formed by a virulent divinity. For example, Oedipus was foretold by the Gods to kill his own father and to get married with his own mother. Exactly the Gods willed him to do everything he didnââ¬â¢t want to. He found, as he thought, the right decision to leave his house. But he didnââ¬â¢t understand the most important thing: the Gods determined the common aspect of personââ¬â¢s destiny, its direction and one of the possible versions of future reality. The destiny could be changed in some situations but the results would be the same as the Gods had foretold. Oedipus was shown to be free at his choice and his ways. But simultaneously all these choices led him to an inevitable results and even to a catastrophe. When he revealed truth of his life he decided to live his native town as he couldnââ¬â¢t cope with new reality which was killing him mentally. Thereby he expressed the main idea of the dramatic plot: it is the God who rules the destiny and the person is only an instrument. The fate and inevitability are nothing compared to a person who understands and realizes his own moral and spiritual essence.

Barbara undertakes life as a person that earns poverty-level wages. The book is a real eye opener to what you can actually do for six to seven dollars an hour. The theme of this book is, from my view, you never realize what you have until it is gone. People all across the United States of America live without some of our necessities because they cant afford much more than shelter and food. Barbara shows in this book that living on minimum wage is possible, but barely. My analysis of the theme in this book is very important for people to see and understand that the group of people who earn the bare minimum wage is probably what you wouldnt suspect. Most Americans believe all those who are poor and homeless are those without a job, only surviving on a little amount received through governmental aid. But in this book, we learn that is no always true. People can still have a job living in the same conditions as someone who doesnââ¬â¢t have a job. They can just have very low-wage jobs. These low-wage jobs hourly pay from the $5. 15 mandatory minimum to the mere but reputable $10 wage. At this salary one may not seem noticeably poor, however factor in the needed expenses of housing, food, childcare, and transportation, one may dwindle into poverty. With an increasing amount of low wage workers from such communities as those of welfare recipients, the employment opportunity is becoming scarce forcing one to migrate in order to accomplish the best salary, leaving a more stressful lifestyle with many more hardships to endure.

Then after they had danced the papas (Aztec priests) laid them down on their backs on some narrow stones of sacrifice and, cutting open their chests, drew out their palpitating hearts which they offered to the idols before them. Then they kicked the bodies down the steps, and the Indian butchers who were waiting below cut off their arms and legs and flayed their faces, which they afterwards prepared like glove leather, with their beards on, and kept for their drunken festivals. Then they ate their flesh with a sauce of peppers and tomatoes.â⬠-Spanish Conquistador, Bernal Diaz (The Enigma of Aztec Sacrifice by Michael Harner (1977:46-50)) The Aztecs were a tribe in central Mexico during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. They were located in Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, on an island in Lake Texcoco. The Aztec community was highly advanced for their time period in things such as architecture and mathematics. They developed a complex calendar, irrigation systems, exquisite art, advanced agriculture, canals used in transportation, chinampas (floating gardens), and were the first civilization to require their children to go to school. Yet, they were extremely violent and resorted to barbaric acts. It appears from the Spanish records and archaeological findings that the Aztecs were most definitely a violent society, but were they inherently violent or did they have rational reasons related to non-violence explaining their behavior? The main reason scholars think that the Aztecs were seen as a maliciousà group was their ritual of human sacrificing. Spanish records of the Aztecs have been known to exaggerate their descriptions of human sacrificing but archaeological research done in 1960 and 1969 tends to support the conquistadoresââ¬â¢ accounts. Headless human rib cages completely lacking the limb bones were found at Aztec sacrificial sites. Although these remains were found, many scholars perceive this as a religious act pertaining to the Aztecââ¬â¢s belief that humans must sacrifice that, which was most precious to them, life, in order to receive in return the sun, rain, and other blessings of the gods that make life possible. Ortiz de Montellano (1978,1990) attributed the Aztec practice of human sacrifice to their belief that the gods required it. He went on to say that the majority of human sacrifice during harvest periods indicated that it was ââ¬Å"a gesture of thanks and reciprocity to the gods ( 1978:614).â⬠The Aztecs often went to war with their neighbors to bring back prisoners for human sacrifice; this was called the flowery wars. Although the Aztecs did take prisoners to be sacrificed, some scholars believe that the flowery wars were not only for obtaining sacrificial victims. Hassig (1990) linked human sacrifice to their unstable economic position. He analyzed the flowery wars as an empire-building strategy that was used to wear down stronger enemies rather than as a deliberate procedure to capture people for sacrifice. Price (1978) and Isaac (1983) similarly thought that the flowery wars reflected the shifting of power between neighboring cities and their inability to conquer the Valley of Mexico (Tlaxcala-Pueblan Valley). Price suggests that the failure of military conquering made human sacrifice an ideal excuse to explain this lack of success. King Moteuczoma characterized the wars as rituals for obtaining captives and as military training for soldiers. This is seen as a strateg ic plan to direct the conquistadoresââ¬â¢ attention away from political and military weaknesses in the Aztec civilization. In the mass majority of sacrificial rituals, cannibalism was performed. This often took part during the sacrificing of prisoners of war but also happened during the sacrifice of some of their own people. Harner (1977) rejected anthropological theories hypothesizing that human sacrifice wasà caused by the requirement of their religion and gods. He thought that their causes were because of a high population rate that caused protein scarcity. Based on studies of population pressure, Harner (1970) suggested that the big picture of Aztec human sacrifice and cannibalism resulted from demographical and ecological factors. These created protein shortages, population pressure, seasonal crop failures, a lack of livestock, the depletion of wild game in the region, famine, and the environment surrounding the valley was not suitable for farming due to the desertification of the land. The Aztecs had corn and beans to provide protein but since these vegetables could only be grown in certain seasons, they were an insufficient way to get protein. This is what led Harner to believe cannibalism was their only constant and abundant supply of protein. Harner also suggested that the purpose of the flowery wars was to capture prisoners to sacrifice with the intent to consume them. Price, (1978) however, disagreed. She stated that the highest classes of society, who consumed most of the human sacrifices, already had easy access to other meat. Ortiz De Montellano (1978) argued against Harnerââ¬â¢s hypothesis as well. He stated that there was a wide range of meat protein available, advances in agricultural techniques, plenty of stored food, and that the Aztecs had a good overall diet. Montellano also suggested other ideas as to why the ââ¬Å"ecological hypothesisâ⬠was not true. The first was that the Aztecs were conquering new lands and areas for agriculture, which sometimes provided them with a new source of game to hunt, thus having a larger pool of meat to eat. His second was of the minor availability of the total human protein from sacrifice because the flesh was reserved for the elite, which included great warriors and priests. Montellanoââ¬â¢s third was evidence that explained that the bulk of the Aztecââ¬â¢s sacrifices took part during the periods of time in the year when there were plenty of crops and plenty of food to easily sustain them. This means that instead of the Aztecs relying on human meat during the off-season, they practiced cannibalism regardless of their food status. Michael Winkelman (1998) said, ââ¬Å"in comparison to other societies with humanà sacrifice, the Aztecs were extreme in several measures: they were the only human sacrifice society in this sample with a high risk of famine; the highest on several measures of population pressure; in the highest category of population density (over 500 persons per square mile); and had the highest levels of overall warfare for land resources. Therefore, their sacrifice and cannibalism may reflect their extreme conditions on many ecological variables.â⬠John M. D. Pohl (2002) stated, ââ¬Å"Aztec sacrifice, once perceived as a ruthless practice committed by a ââ¬Ëtribeââ¬â¢ seemingly obsessed with bloodshed, is now seen as no more or less brutal than what many imperial civilizations have done.â⬠The Aztecs were not the only people throughout the Earthââ¬â¢s history to have such violent practices. William Prescott (1992) compiled research comparing the Aztecs violent ways to those of other cultures throughout history. According to Prescottââ¬â¢s research, such violent practices were found among the ancient Canaanites, the Celtic people, and the Romans. The Romans had slaves that they condemned to die merely for the purpose of entertainment in the Colosseum. The research also notes the story of Abraham and Isaac in the Old Testament, where Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son for God. While the story was against sacrifice it still shows that it was a known practice. Another biblical story of sacrifice that Prescott mentions is the story of Jepthah. Jepthah pledges that he will sacrifice the first living creature that he saw when returning home if god would give him victory in his upcoming battle. When Jepthah returns home, he is greeted by his daughter and is forced by the bindings of his word to make a burnt offering of his daughter. Prescottââ¬â¢s compilation of research also included the Hindu custom of suttee, which was the suicide of the widow on the funeral pyre of her husband because of the Hindu belief in Samsara. French anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss (1964) described the Aztecs as suffering from ââ¬Å"a maniacal obsession with blood and torture.â⬠However, Harner (1977:51) stated, ââ¬Å"Gruesome as these practices may seem, an ecological perspective and population pressure theory render the Aztec emphasis on human sacrifice acceptable as a natural and rational response to the material conditions of their existence. A materialist ecologicalà approach reveals the Aztecs to be neither irrational nor mentally ill, but merely human beings who, faced with unusual survival problems, responded with unusual behavior.â⬠The Aztecââ¬â¢s beliefs about the world and how they, as a people, could keep the sun rising and the plants growing and therefore continued life for future generations was also a very powerful force in their commitment to give to the gods the highest honor of human sacrifice. The Aztecs definitely had a violent culture and had some very unorthodox practices, but were their methods any more cruel than nuclear warfare, terrorism, and torture for political reasons? We look at the Aztecââ¬â¢s reasons for their violent actions as insufficient but we do not question our own reasons for the violence we create today.
